Viagra was used as a method to prevent plant wilting. It was noted that low-concentration of Viagra in water prolongs the time before cut plants wilt.

Different experiments were held to evaluate the time which flowers can stand fresh when Viagra was added to the water. One test showed a doubling in time from one week to two weeks. The phenomenon is simply explained by the same mechanism of action as Viagra has in humans -  sildenafil the main component of Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor which decrease the nitric oxide produced by the flowers.

The drug in small concentrations dissolved in water can prolong the life of cut flowers. Some researchers state that Viagra makes plants stand up straight for as long as a week beyond their natural life span. Besides the drug makes flowers look fresh and prevents drooping.

Viagra was tested on different plants such as: strawberries, legumes, roses, carnations, broccoli, and other perishables.

Some researches confirm that using Viagra is a safe and cheap method for increasing the shelf life of fruit, vegetables, and cut flowers using nitric oxide.
